The 46-year-old, who has not been identified, died of her injuries in hospital after the blaze broke out at about 1700 BST on Sunday.

Fire crews who went to the property, in Wardieburn Street West in the Granton area, found it well alight.

They rescued the woman using breathing equipment and took her to hospital where she died a short time later.

More than 15 firefighters were involved in tackling the blaze at its height.

They had to force entry to five neighbouring flats in the same block to make sure the blaze had not spread.

No-one else was injured in the fire, which police are not treating as suspicious.
